Though he had limited formal education, Dr Wee embraced learning throughout his years. His early days in trading trained him to be decisive and pragmatic, traits that became hallmarks of his leadership.

A vital lesson from Dr Wee’s attempt to corner the pepper market in 1955 was that a good leader must also know when to step back. Dr Wee credits this lesson to his father: “Doing business, he taught me, did not mean winning all the time. The smart entrepreneur is one who knows how to cut his losses when the going gets tough.”

Dr Wee’s vision was clear: to foster a cohesive team within the Bank, united by the shared goal of creating long-term value for all stakeholders.
