Frequently asked questions

How does eGIRO work?
chevron

eGIRO allows billing organisations and their customers to set up direct debit authorisations (DDAs) electronically within minutes, eliminating the exchange of paper GIRO application forms. This is enabled for DDA applications across the eGIRO participating banks, via a designated “Aggregator”, which acts like a central interchange that participating banks communicate with to facilitate the electronic exchange of DDA requests and confirmations.

Banking Computer Services Pte Ltd (BCS) is the appointed operator of the eGIRO platform.

The GIRO applicant (payer) will now be able to apply for the DDA setup via the billing organisation’s website or mobile app to get eGIRO processed and completed within minutes. The payer would just need to specify the designated paying bank (Applicant Bank) where the applicant holds his/her account against which the DDA will be set up.

Once the DDA application request has been pushed to the Applicant Bank via the Aggregator, the GIRO applicant can then go into his/her bank’s internet banking login page, log in and select the preferred debiting bank account.

Applicant will then receive a confirmation from his/her bank that the setup of the eGIRO application is successful. Whether the confirmation is sent via SMS or email is dependent on the Applicant Bank’s capabilities.

For UOB specifically, retail applicants will be notified via SMS or email alerts while corporate applicants will be notified via email.

The current GIRO application process takes around 3 to 4 weeks to complete end-to-end. With the new eGIRO service, the turnaround time is reduced to only minutes for consumers and up to 48 hours for corporates with designated approvers.

No. eGIRO will not totally replace paper GIRO. The current paper GIRO application process will remain available.

eGIRO is available 24 x 7.

There are stringent security measures in place to safeguard applicants’ personal or corporate data that passes through eGIRO. Transmitted data is encrypted and only the bank and the billing organisation that are authorised to receive the applicant’s information can decrypt the data to execute the setup request initiated.

The authentication and authorisation process are further underpinned by the respective banks’ two-factor authentication and transaction signing requirements.

No. Existing GIROs will not be impacted when a billing oragnisation is onboarded to eGIRO. Billing organisations can continue to effect direct debit collections based on existing GIRO arrangements already in place.

A billing organisation can build the eGIRO cancellation workflow to allow applicants to terminate an existing eGIRO online. This is also supported by the eGIRO Aggregator.  However, amendment of an existing eGIRO is not supported by eGIRO Aggregator. Applicants can approach their bank for such requests.

Your organisation would need to initiate and complete a direct technical integration with the eGIRO Aggregator based on the technical specifications published by BCS, the eGIRO operator. Additionally, the end-to-end direct debit application workflow would need to be developed on your website as the billing organisation.
